March 2008, that's around the time I joined KARTS, Clive ZS6BT had found Mario and I on CB Radio, and invited us to do an introductory ZU course that had just been introduced, the numbers of Ham Radio operators in the country was failing sharply, with little to no new comers coming into the hobby. Having passed the ZU course, I took on the Call Sign ZU6ET
ET, being my nick name 😀 it still is.
ZU limited us to 20 watts and a limited spectrum of the HF band, we also had limited access to 2m and 70 cm's
I remember Clive shaking my hand, his words, congratulations, now when are you writing the ZR?
The picture below is of our ZU Class, in September 2008, most of the students had come from CB Radio, and now wanted to be HAMS...
Β
Can anyone help to identify all the students?
Paul ZS6PJC was part of the training team, Paul now SK, normally taught the electronic component subjects, like transformers, Resistance, Capacitance and Inductance. the primary and secondary coils of a transformer etc.
Paul assisted the club with training for many of those early years.
Some students the I can recall:
Johan, ZS6DMX, Heinrich ZU6ECC, Martin ZS6TMN (SK) Ben, and Veronique ZS6VER
In 2008, Hannes ZS6LW, was the Chairman of KARTS, with Clive ZS6BT the secretary, and Vivian ZS6VD the Technical officer.
Hannes moved to New Zealand round about this time, I'm not sure if it was in 2008 or 2009, but I did not know him long. https://www.qrz.com/db/ZL1LW
Back in the day, we had a UHF Repeater on 438.925 MHz, its located on top of the Trustbank building in the centre of town. It was a STORNO Repeater.

Here's Vivian ZS6VD, getting ready to set the tone level of our CTCSS board, we manufactured many of these, and even sold them to Hams across the country.
This one was getting installed into a Midland Syntech Radio, belonging to the club.
Is that Johan ZS6NJJ in the background? 🙂Β

We did it in 2009, we've done it over the years, and we'll do it again in October this year.
